The Apache dreaded any kind of ailment—either physical or spiritual. If a disease struck their camp, they fled in panic. They also believed the worst maladies were borne by creatures, especially owls, bears, and coyotes. Such illnesses had to be treated by a medicine man or woman, called a shaman, who had acquired special powers from these animals. The Apache especially dreaded owls, and the appearance of one of these birds around camp aroused great concern. There were no jokes and few stories about owls because it was considered bad luck to even mention the bird's name.
